California Jazz Conservatory Vocal Chair, Laurie Antonioli, has been writing and recording her original lyrics for over 30 years. From her first release, “Soul Eyes,” through her latest, “Varuna.” Over time, she has come to value the craft of writing itself, as much as original ideas or personal stories. This has informed her own writing, and at the same time, increased her appreciation of the wonderful lyrics written by others – from the Great American Songbook, to Joni Mitchell and beyond. “Lyric Writing – A Toolbox for All Levels” provides students with access to the many tools Laurie has developed which have both guided and inspired her to produce innovative world-class original material. This workshop is for those who’ve never written a lyric, to those who are established and looking for inspiration and new ideas. Topics covered include: getting started; rhyming; collaborating; differentiating between poetry and lyrics; examining both universal and personal stories; and looking at some fun angles, exercises and perspectives to produce a provocative lyric. Students are given an in-class writing assignment and will leave with a finished piece. Please bring a notebook and pens. Handwritten work is highly encouraged!
